KUCHING, Oct 24: New faces and potentially more women candidates could feature in the 13th Sarawak Election, with Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Dato Sri Nancy Shukri saying the final line-up will only become clear as nomination day approaches.
As reported by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), she said the selection of candidates rested with the respective political parties, adding that she respected whoever was chosen to contest.
“There are new faces, and we welcome whatever decisions the respective parties make. We respect whoever is chosen,” she told reporters after launching Women and Youth Empowerment Through Crafts and Performing Arts (WEAVE) 2026 here today.
On the possibility of more women being fielded, Nancy said she had heard that their numbers could increase, although this remained uncertain until the nomination stage.
“As for female candidates, I have heard that there may be an increase, but we do not know yet. In politics, we will not know for sure until the nomination stage approaches,” she said.
She added that the priority was to ensure Sarawak had capable candidates who could lead the state towards greater heights while supporting its development agenda.
Nancy said the focus ahead of the State election should remain on sustaining development efforts and building on the progress Sarawak had already achieved. — DayakDaily
