BINTULU, March 5: Sakura Ferroalloys Sdn Bhd’s (Sakura) new sinter plant worth USD30 million in Bintulu is expected to be commissioned in the second half of this year.
Sakura chairman Tiaan Van Aswegen said the construction for the new plant is currently ongoing.
“Essentially, it is converting manganese ore into a product that improves the efficiencies and the effectiveness of the furnaces.
“…(It) will also lower the cost base of Sakura,” he said during Sakura’s 10th anniversary dinner held here earlier tonight.
He also mentioned that Sakura is currently conducting a feasibility study to produce a value-added refined ferromanganese product.
“The study will be concluded by the middle of this year.
“If the study results are positive, this might lead to a further investment of around USD100 million at Sakura,” he added.
Additionally, he said studies to produce byproducts from current waste streams such as slag, fumes and gas are also being pursued.
Many of these projects, he said, are focused on ensuring that Sakura will continue to be well positioned for the green world in the future.
