KUCHING, Nov 30: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) has claimed victory in the recently concluded 17th Sabah election, winning 29 out of the 55 contested seats from the total of 73.

According to Bernama, GRS’ victory saw Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor returning to lead the State administration as he was officially sworn in for a second term as chief minister.

Hajiji, who is also GRS chairman and retained his Sulaman seat, took his oath before Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman in a ceremony at Istana Seri Kinabalu at around 3am today.

Following GRS is Parti Warisan (Warisan) with 25 seats, Barisan Nasional (BN) (6), UPKO (3), STAR (2), KDM (1), Perikatan Nasional (PN) (1), Pakatan Harapan (PH) (1), and Independent candidates (5).

The Sabah election, which took place on Saturday (Nov 29), also saw the Democratic Action Party (DAP)—contesting under the PH banner—suffering a wipeout, losing all eight seats it contested.

In a New Straits Times (NST) report, the biggest casualty was in Tanjung Aru, where Sabah DAP deputy chairman Datuk Chan Foong Hin, who is also the deputy plantation and commodities minister, lost to Warisan.

DAP also lost its seats in Kapayan, Likas, Luyang, Sri Tanjong, Elopura, Tanjung Papat, and Kemabong—marking the first time since 2004 that DAP will have no representation in the Sabah Legislative Assembly.

Meanwhile, PAS—under PN—won a seat when its Sabah branch chairman, Datuk Dr Aliakbar Gulasan, was elected Karambunai assemblyman—cementing his status as the first PAS member to break into the State.

The other parties that contested included Parti Impian Sabah (PIS), Parti Kebangsaan Sabah (PKS) Parti Kerjasama Anak Negeri (Anak Negeri), Parti Perpaduan Rakyat Sabah (PPRS), Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK), Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP), Parti Damai Sabah (PDS), Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM), and Parti Aspirasi Rakyat Sarawak (Aspirasi), but they failed to secure any seats.
