MIRI, Sept 24: Rubbish traps installed by the Miri City Council (MCC) in various strategic locations along the Miri River have successfully collected approximately 20.1 tonnes of trash from 2020 to September this year.
According to Minister of Transport Sarawak Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin, year-by-year statistics on garbage collection on Miri River from 2019 to 2021 has seen a marked improvement.
Lee said this today after officiating at the ‘World Rivers Day’ celebration at Kampung Pengkalan Lutong multipurpose hall on Saturday.
This year’s celebration theme is ‘Waterways in Our Community’.
Lee added that various initiatives have been carried out to ensure and protect the town’s rivers from pollution.
“Amongst these initiatives are installing floating boom barriers around the Miri Bypass Bridge which has been completed on Aug 25 this year and removing water hyacinth plants from the area (Miri Bypass Bridge) up to Lutong Bridge which is expected to be fully completed by the end of October,” he disclosed.
He pointed out that the Sarawak government will always be committed to ensuring and providing a safe and comfortable river transport system for all citizens who use it.
During the programme, various activities were organised by the Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MOT) and MCC’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) committee with villagers of Kampung Pengkalan Lutong, aimed to inculcate public’s attitude towards safeguarding the State’s waterways.
Among the activities were a colouring contest for the village’s kindergarten children and collecting garbage along the river. — DayakDaily
