KUCHING, July 16: Two projects involving road resurfacing works at Stampin Resettlement Scheme and a RM10 million flood mitigation project at Sungai Stakan under the Kota Sentosa constituency will be implemented soon.

Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap said that the flood mitigation project for Sungai Stakan is important as it will alleviate flooding in the Mile 7 surrounding areas.

“We met up with the residents on the project yesterday (July 15). The project will be implemented by DID (Department of Irrigation and Drainage Sarawak),” he said today.

Yap highlighted this during a press conference after witnessing the swearing-in ceremony of Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, Deputy Mayor Hilmi Othman and 30 councillors together with Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian at MBKS Headquarters here today.

Earlier on, Wee emphasised that there will be more funding coming this year, and the Council, together with elected representatives, have identified the areas and localities where infrastructure projects can be planned to be implemented as quickly as possible.

“More areas will be covered, including the Stampin Resettlement area from Aug 1 onwards.

“Residents of N12 Kota Sentosa constituency should be happy with an elected representative (Yap) who can assist the Council with more funding. I am equally grateful to our YB for looking into the interests and needs of these areas,” he said.

Wee, however, also advised elected representatives to inform the local councils before implementing an infrastructure project which will require compliance with certain specifications.

“Please don’t just do it on your own because, at the end of the day, you will pass back the maintenance to the council. If it is not to our standard, how can we comply with the maintenance part? Let us work together,” he said.

Yap has also made a sincere plea to the public for greater understanding as the government will not be able to solve all problems immediately, but instead, systematically and progressively.

“You must understand that Kota Sentosa (constituency) has not been under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) for over a decade.

“Now, under GPS, it is my commitment, and with the assistance of local councils and Deputy Premier, we will be able to settle all these problems one by one.

“If you expect us to solve all the problems immediately, we are unable to do that. We need to settle the problems systematically and progressively,” he said.

Regarding funding, Yap is confident that with the help of Dr Sim and the GPS government, more people’s projects will be implemented.

“So just bear with us. We are not going to run away. ‘Janji akan ditepati’ (promises will be fulfilled), but they can only be fulfilled progressively and based on the funding we can get because we need to be fair to areas in other constituencies as well.

“We (Kota Sentosa) are starting late, but we are trying to catch up,” he said while expressing his appreciation to MBKS, other local councils and Dr Sim for their support, guidance and assistance. — DayakDaily
