BEKENU, April 29: A bridge project worth over RM6 million and spanning 90 metres is set to transform connectivity for residents of Kampung Bulau, currently separated by the Sibuti River.
With the groundbreaking ceremony officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas today, the project, under the Sarawak government’s People’s Project initiative, aims to boost rural infrastructure and improve the mobility and safety of local communities.
According to a media release, the bridge is expected to provide a faster, safer, and more convenient route across the river, replacing the current reliance on a narrow pedestrian suspension bridge, once completed.
Constructed using Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) technology, the RM6,093,026.45 project will include a 90-metre-long and 4.5-metre-wide bridge, along with 450 metres of new access roads on both ends, built to Standard R1 specifications.
The project is scheduled for full completion by the end of February 2027.

In his speech, Uggah directed the appointed contractor to complete the project within 18 months, commending the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR Sarawak) for its dedication in planning and launching the project.
Deputy Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, Datuk Hajah Rosey Yunus, also praised JKR Sarawak for its strong commitment to improving infrastructure in Bekenu.
Meanwhile, JKR Sarawak director Ir Dr Cassidy Morris urged cooperation from the local community to ensure smooth project implementation, pledging the department’s continued service to the people in line with its motto, “We Build For You”.
The groundbreaking ceremony not only marks the start of construction but also signifies a major step towards uplifting Bekenu’s infrastructure and socio-economic development. — DayakDaily
