KUCHING, June 19: The Ministry of Works (KKR) needs an allocation of almost RM4 billion to upgrade damaged roads nationwide, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi says.
However, according to a report by TVS, Nanta stressed that despite the limited allocation, maintenance and improvement works are still being carried out according to needs.
He emphasised that the constraint faced by the ministry is that it does not have sufficient maintenance allocation.
“In this regard, we are carrying out maintenance in stages. We have data and know which roads are in bad condition.
“That is why we do it based on its priorities and critical needs,” he told reporters after attending KKR’s Gawai Open House event, which was also attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusuf and Deputy Minister of Works Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.
Some of the roads categorised as being in critical need of repair include the East-West Highway (JRTB), which connects Gerik, Perak to Jeli, Kelantan, Nanta noted.
“That is why there are roads that are damaged but not that critical, we will later (repair them). JRTB is included in the list of critical roads,” he said.
He also announced that an allocation of RM55 million will be used to improve JRTB this year which involves adding street lights, road repair works and installing road lines. – DayakDaily
