RM20 mln earth bunding project to complement drainage system in Taman Desa Wira

KUCHING, July 16: Batu Kawah assemblyman Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian has sought an additional allocation of RM20 million from the Sarawak government to implement earth bunding project for the drainage system’s enhance and improvement in Taman Desa Wira area here.

Dr Sim, in a statement today, said this huge local development and people’s project will be handled by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID).

“DID will do the feasible study, designs and in charge the tender process,” he said after inspecting the project site together with DID director Datu Chok Moi Soon and deputy director Ir Law Wee today.


Dr Sim also said that the proposed RM20 million earth bunding project will span as long as two kilometres from Taman Desa Wira untill Sg Maong’s left tributary via Desa Wira Lorong 5.

The project will include the river’s widening and building of two tidal control structures and a detention pond.

“Once this project has been completed, it will curb the river’s flooding and back flowing to nearby residential areas and pedestrian’s walkway will be built around the area to promote sports,” he added.

Besides the recent RM120 million drainage system upgrading project, Dr Sim emphasised that Batu Kawa, especially the Taman Desa Wira area, needs such a project to enhance and further improve the existing drainage system in order to cope with the area’s mass development whereby a lot of commercial centre, condominium and residential houses being built there now. — DayakDaily
