MIRI, Dec 7: A shop owner in Jalan Raja was stunned when she discovered three steel manhole covers missing on Thursday.

“It has become a hazard for customers as the drain is left uncovered,” said the coffee shop owner, who wanted to be known only as Wong.

She added that she had alerted Miri City Council (MCC) on the matter.

In response to the issue, mayor Adam Yii revealed that 31 of such covers had been reported stolen or broken since January this year, which involved a total loss of RM12,000.

“If only we have people of better civic-mindedness, compassion and empathy, we will have a much better world”, he opined.

“Ninety-nine per cent of the problems in our society are man-made,” he reckoned. — DayakDaily
