IGAN, Aug 15: Once vulnerable to riverbank erosion, the Igan Waterfront has breathed new life under a RM1.5 million upgrading project featuring stronger protection structures, new pedestrian walkways, and improved drainage, creating a safer and more comfortable space for the community.
According to a TVS news report, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya said the 12-month project, which began on March 26 last year, focused on strengthening erosion-prone sections of the riverbank while improving the overall waterfront environment.
“The main components include riverbank protection structures using gabion blocks, reinforced concrete pedestrian walkways, and a reinforced concrete drainage system.
“These facilities make the waterfront more organised and functional while providing stronger protection against erosion,” he said after witnessing the handover of the completed project from the Mukah Divisional Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) to the Igan Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) yesterday (Aug 14).
Juanda, who is also Jemoreng assemblyman, said the project had significantly changed the landscape along the Igan River.
He said the area, which was previously exposed to erosion, is now neater, more organised, and suitable as a public space for residents.
“The new facilities also provide opportunities for the local community to carry out recreational and social activities. The waterfront could also potentially serve as a stopover for visitors coming to Igan,” he said.
Meanwhile, residents welcomed the completed project, saying its benefits go beyond strengthening the Igan riverbank.
They said the project has also transformed the waterfront into a more attractive area while providing facilities the local community can enjoy. — DayakDaily
