KUCHING, Feb 18: Relevant authorities, implementing agencies, and service providers have been urged to expedite the implementation of 28 new telecommunication towers in the Bekenu and Lambir constituencies.

According to a statement by Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), this came following a briefing held with Datuk Rosey Yunus and Dr Ripin Lamat, the assemblypersons for Bekenu and Lambir, respectively.

SMA general manager Dr Zaidi Razak explained that the Sarawak government, through SMA and Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), is actively overseeing the construction of 11 new telecommunication towers in Bekenu and Lambir.

ā€œIn addition, the Federal government, through Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), is also overseeing the construction of 17 towers under its Jendela initiative.

ā€œSMA is actively overseeing that all telecommunication development projects in the whole of Sarawak are being expedited to address the predicament faced by the communities, and we are doing our best to ensure that Sarawakians have access to stable and reliable connectivity.

ā€œThe Sarawak government has put emphasis on digital infrastructure as one of its top priorities to drive Sarawakā€™s digital economy agenda through the Sarawak Linking Urban, Rural and Nation (Saluran) initiative,ā€ he said.

He added that feedback from local elected representatives and community leaders is crucial for the Sarawak government to justify and seek additional funding from the Federal government.

MCMC Sarawak director Adiman Ajem and community leaders were also present during the briefing. ā€” DayakDaily
