MIRI, Aug 15: The Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) has benefited 8,028 Sarawakian students, says Sarawak Deputy Minister for Women, Children, and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Rosey Yunus.
In a TVS news report, she said this demonstrates the Sarawak government’s commitment to expanding access to higher education, as the 64 fields of study offered under the scheme are structured around employment needs and Sarawak’s future development.
“The 64 courses provided are courses for jobs in Sarawak, and Sarawak’s future rests on your shoulders. Make sure you seek information about FTES and work towards achieving that goal,” she said at the FTES Education Expo at Arena Sibuti in Bekenu here today.
At the same time, she stressed that academic excellence must be matched with extra effort and multidisciplinary skills to keep students competitive in the workforce.
She said proficiency in English and additional skills were among the factors that could set a student apart from their peers.
“What sets you apart is putting in extra effort and having additional skills. Strive for excellence and always challenge yourselves,” she said.
Speaking on the expo, she said that it provided an opportunity for students, particularly those in Forms Four, Five, and Six, to explore the various educational opportunities available.
She added that students should make full use of the facilities and information provided, including opportunities to pursue further studies through FTES.
“You (students) are very fortunate because a lot of information, opportunities, and avenues have been made available to you. Everything is at your fingertips; it is up to you how you make use of these opportunities,” she said.
At the event, nine outstanding Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) students and 21 outstanding Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) students from the Subis district for 2025 received awards for their academic achievements.
Yayasan Sarawak organised the expo in collaboration with the Subis District Education Office. It brought together 30 exhibitors from various government agencies, including seven private higher education institutions (IPTS) owned by the Sarawak government, and attracted about 500 visitors. — DayakDaily
