MIRI, Feb 27: A contract to complete the remaining construction work of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sayed Othman here will be retendered, says Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew.

“The decision to re-tender was made in order to ensure that the project is completed efficiently and hopefully, we can complete it by 2025,” Ting said earlier today, after visiting the site at Jalan Merpati.

Ting was accompanied by Public Works Department Miri’s assistant divisional engineer Louis Jonathan Philip, and Awang Ali Awang Ahmad from Miri Education Department.

Ting who is also Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts I (Tourism), added, the new contractor will be responsible for completing the remaining balance of the construction work in a timely manner.

The former contract was terminated on October 30, last year (2023).

“The completion up to that time was 69.27 per cent …remaining 30 per cent when the contract terminated (on October 30, 2023),” he told local media.

Construction on the RM7.9 million project commenced on Sept 17, 2020 and was supposed to be completed on March 16, 2022.

Ting expressed hope that pupils can start using the new building by the new term in 2025.

In 2016, the school’s floor suddenly collapsed during class following a severe infestation of termites. No one was injured. The incident left pupils’ parents in shock and disbelief.

The pupils were temporarily relocated to SK Miri to resume their studies until a new building could be constructed. SK Sayed Othman currently has 187 pupils. — DayakDaily
