KUCHING, Aug 16: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will most likely join forces with the party or coalition which emerges as the winner in the latest games of throne in Putrajaya.

This is the view of Prof Dr Jayum Jawan, political scientist of Universiti Putra Malaysia who believes GPS will follow anyone who rises to be the 9th prime minister as to do otherwise would not bring any benefit to Sarawak.

“Sarawak will follow the winner. Whomever rises to be the prime minister, Sarawak will follow. I don’t think Sarawak has any qualm about that as there is nothing to gain by doing otherwise,” Jayum told Dayakdaily today.

Earlier today, Muhyiddin resigned as Prime Minister of Malaysia following the loss of majority support in the Parliament.

He had an audience with Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah to tender his resignation at Istana Negara after chairing the last PN Cabinet meeting.

During a live telecast today, he said he had to resign after 15 MPs from the United Malays National Organisation (Umno) had withdrawn their support for him and his proposal to form a cross-party bipartisan government had been rejected by the the opposition.

Jayum praised Muhyiddin’s pro-active move to resign once the latter lost the majority support.

“It’s magnanimous of him to give way in a dignify manner. He could have waited for the convening of the Parliament where it’s a proper place to ascertain whether he indeed has lost his majority,” said Jayum.

Jayum expected massive political manoeuvring following the resignation of Muhyiddin but hoped that the final showdown will take place in the right place – the Parliament.

“So we can expect political manoeuvring by parties and individuals to secure the majority support and to show the King that he will have that (majority) in the dewan rakyat (the Parliament).

“SDs (statutory declarations) seem to be okay but the real test of support for the person to be the new prime minister will have to be the votes of confidence in the dewan rakyat,” said Jayum. — DayakDaily
