KUCHING, Aug 8: If the results of the Negeri Sembilan and Johor state elections are any indication of what may lie ahead in the next General Election (GE), it is even more important for Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) to remain fully united so that Sarawak can continue fighting for its rights in a federal government that could potentially be led by the Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) alliance.
In a statement, political pundit Dato Peter Minos responded to analysts’ predictions that the BN-PN alliance might secure at least 112 of 222 parliamentary seats in the coming GE.
With the wins in state polls that the BN-PN alliance has been experiencing, Minos said that it is vital for GPS to unite and rally behind Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg so that Sarawak can continue fighting for its rights in a federal government that BN-PN could potentially lead.
“Unity is our only defence—our only way of survival,” he said.
Meanwhile, Minos said that Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) string of losses in recent state elections could mean rough times ahead for the coalition.
“The losses in Johor, Negeri Sembilan, and Sabah are bad—and PH will most likely lose in Melaka, which is a United Malays National Organisation (Umno) stronghold,” he said.
While he noted that PH might fare better in Penang and Selangor, he said that Kelantan, Perlis, and Kedah could be easy wins for PAS, with Pahang being another one of Umno’s bases—making it harder for PH to survive the force of the BN-PN alliance in the GE.
He attributed several factors to PH’s loss in the recent state elections, such as failing to address the rising cost of living, failing to keep its word on reforms, and underestimating political opponents. — DayakDaily
