KUCHING, Aug 2: The Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) alliance has claimed victory in the 16th Negeri Sembilan state election by winning 25 seats in the 36-member state assembly, ending Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) hold on the state government after two terms.
According to the Election Commission (EC), the state polls saw BN win 18 seats, PN secure 7, and PH win 11. The combined 25 seats held by BN and PN put them above the 24-seat threshold required to achieve a two-thirds majority in the state assembly.
The state polls saw a voter turnout of 646,084 or 72.64 per cent.
One of PH’s biggest losses was in Chennah, where Democratic Action Party (DAP) secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook lost to BN’s Siow Kong Chun, who is Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) Youth chief.
Loke, who is also the federal Minister of Transport, held the seat for three terms. Siow garnered 5,726 votes with a majority of 688 over Loke’s 5,038.
Another major loss for PH was in Linggi, where its state chairman, Aminuddin Harun, who has been Menteri Besar for two terms, lost to BN’s Faizal Ramli, an Umno Supreme Council member and a member of Aminuddin’s state executive council since August 2023.
Aminuddin held the Sikamat state seat for four terms before deciding to contest the BN stronghold of Linggi. Faizal secured 9,139 votes with a majority of 2,976 over Aminuddin’s 6,163 while Bersatu’s Dato Zamri Md Said lost his deposit with 391 votes.
The 16th Negeri Sembilan state election was held on Saturday (Aug 1), which saw 103 candidates vying for 36 state seats.
PH contested in all seats, while BN and PN reached an electoral understanding under which BN contested 25 and PN 11. Bersatu, however, has broken away from the coalition and contested 24 seats under its own logo.
Other parties that contested the election include Parti Sosialis Malaysia and Parti Orang Asli Malaysia, each with one seat.
