KUCHING, March 30: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Youth holds that the resignation of Sri Aman MP Datuk Masir Kujat from Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) demonstrates the urgency for Anti-Party Hopping law to be enacted.

PRS Youth chief Datuk Snowdan Lawan said it was anyone’s guess which party Masir will join but what must be understood was that no door should be opened for the latter.

To Snowdan, Masir’s action was the result of political immaturity as well as lack of loyalty to party and principles in politics.

“Being an independent MP without development funding, we believe there is insurmountable pressure from the rural rakyat for him to deliver development,” he said in a statement today.

However, Snowdan who is also Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Deputy Minister, speculated that the real intention of Masir’s announcement was to “beat the enactment of the Anti-Party Hopping law” which will be tabled on April 11’s parliamentary sitting.

Calling for Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) to be cautious of Masir’s move, he suggested that there be a “barring of entry” for the MP into the ruling coalition.

“Perhaps an ‘entry barred status’ should be placed at the entrance door so as to disallow entry prior to the enactment of the Anti-Party Hopping law.

“Possibly, let GE15 (15th General Election) which will be due a year away to determine the politician’s future movement, taking into account the reality check following the enactment of the Anti-Party Hopping law,” said Snowdan.

To him, party hopping is a menace which may destroy a party’s unity.

Meanwhile, Masir has quit PSB today with immediate effect.

In a statement, Masir said he made the decision due to political instability in Malaysia which clearly affects the country’s economy, development and people’s wellbeing and claimed to have made the decision after discussions with grassroots supporters in his area.

The Sri Aman MP was a member of PRS from 2008 to 2019. In March 2019, he joined PSB and was a presidential council member.

In 2021 Sarawak Election, he stood for PSB as Balai Ringin candidate. However, he lost to incumbent Snowdan with 3,351 votes in a three-cornered fight. Snowdan managed to poll 4,816 votes while Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) candidate Kasim Mana managed to receive only 195 votes.— DayakDaily
