KUCHING, March 8: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Women wants more women in the party to be appointed as councillors and community leaders to change the party’s men-centric image.
In PRS Central Women’s meeting today, several women leaders took the opportunity of today being International Women’s Day to voice out their opinions on the lack of women representation within PRS, with Councillor Mutang Kerani describing PRS as a “men-centric” political party.
“The men-centric image of PRS as a party must be eradicated. For example, in PRS, out of 112 councillor posts given to PRS only 20 are filled by women.
“There are some PRS constituencies which have zero women appointed as councillors, likewise as recipients of State and federal awards to mention a few.
“Our YBs must hence forth consider appointing more women to be community leaders too,” Mutang who is a PRS Women exco member and PRS Women Ngemah chief was quoted as saying by PRS Women deputy chief Rosaline Neging in a press statement today.
Meanwhile, Councillor Donna Petrus who is also a PRS Women exco member and Dudong PRS Women deputy chief was also quoted as being in agreement that women are under-represented in PRS whether as people’s representatives or any other political appointments within the party or externally.
Apart from the above two decisions, Rosaline disclosed that another resolution reached was unanimous support for PRS Women chief Dato Sri Doris Sophia Brodie to be fielded as the party’s 15th General Election candidate for Sri Aman.
The PRS Central Women’s wing meeting today was held in preparation for the party’s upcoming Triennial Delegates Conference (TDC) which will be held from April 23 to 24. — DayakDaily
