KUCHING, May 12: Tellian assemblyman Royston Valentine has suggested that the Sarawak government consider establishing a dedicated research institution such as a Sarawak Rice Research Institute, under the proposed Sarawak Padi and Rice Board to enhance long-term innovation and development in the State’s rice industry.
Speaking during the debate on the Sarawak Padi and Rice Board Bill 2026 in the State Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today, he said the proposed institution could serve as a specialised centre for research, development and innovation to support the transformation of the sector.
“Such a facility would be instrumental in developing climate-resilient rice varieties, improving productivity and advancing the use of modern agricultural technologies, including precision farming and artificial intelligence (AI).
“Institution like this can become a centre of excellence for agricultural technology, seed development, mechanisation, smart farming, and talent development,” he said.
He added that strengthening research capacity is essential if Sarawak is to position itself as a regional food producer while reducing its dependence on imported rice.
In this context, the Tellian assemblyman pointed to global challenges such as climate change, supply chain disruptions and rising import costs which he said underscore the need for a more resilient and self-sufficient food system.
Meanwhile, the Sarawak Padi and Rice Board Bill 2026 seeks to establish a statutory body to oversee the development of the State’s rice industry, covering areas such as production, logistics, research, marketing and commercialisation.
“The proposed board represents a strategic shift towards a more coordinated and technology-driven agricultural sector tailored to Sarawak’s geographical and socio-economic conditions,” he added.
He expressed support for the Bill, describing it as a “game changer” that could transform the State’s rice industry from a traditional sector into a modern, technology-driven agro-industry. — DayakDaily
