KUCHING, Nov 9: Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg wants Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) Semiconductor to produce green chips as Sarawak is shifting towards green economy.

He said these chips would have green designs and be eco-friendly or beneficial to the environment.

“Particularly when the world is moving towards green, you’ll need green devices, green appliances and therefore green designs. I hope SMD Semiconductor would be successful in this aspect,” he said.

Other than automobiles, Abang Johari said chip designs in devices such as smartphones, sensors and cameras are also ever-changing based on trends and demands.

“If you noticed, cameras have changed a lot. Last time, cameras were so bulky and now there are very small cameras.

“This is because the chips inside these cameras have changed, and it will continue to change especially when the world goes for green technology,” he said at a press conference at Tegas Digital Village (TDV) here today.

Abang Johari was launching the new SMD Semiconductor as well as witnessing the signing of the Framework Service Agreement between SMD and Melexis NV (Belgium) and the Tenancy Agreement between SMD Semiconductor and TDV.

Also present were Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn, Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environemnt-cum-Tegas chairman Datu Len Talif Salleh, SMD Semiconductor chief executive officer Shariman Jalil and Melexia NV (Belgium) chief executive officer Marc Biron. — DayakDaily
