KUCHING, Aug 22: Sarawak is exploring other derivatives of gas that would economically benefit both Sarawak and Malaysia as a whole, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

According to Abang Johari, Sarawak cannot rely solely on supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG) and must have a road map to go downstream as far as possible.

“Of course, we are supplying energy, but there is more than energy that can be processed from gas, and we know that based on a study, there is a possibility of more gas out there.

“If we want to explore all the reserves, what we will do is that we have to add value to the gas,” said Abang Johari in his speech during the Petchem Methanol Plant project installation ceremony in Tanjung Kidurong, Bintulu, today.

Meanwhile, Abang Johari thanked Petronas for agreeing to share their gas reserves in Sarawak and constructing a gas facility in Kidurong.

He said the Petchem Methanol Plant facility is needed to store additional gas that will be supplied to Sarawak industrial usage.

“It is wholly owned by Sarawak. We also manage to train our local people in the production process of methanol and its technology which a Sarawakian heads.

“These will become a catalyst to our aspiration to establish a petrochemical hub in Sarawak, particularly in Bintulu Region,” he added. — DayakDaily
