KUCHING, Oct 2: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg want primary schools built by the federal government in Sarawak to be based on the standard and design used for SK Meludam.

Abang Johari said, although education is the federal government’s responsibility, the construction of SK Meludam was by the Sarawak government.

“We do not want the primary schools built by the federal government to be below this standard.

“No. It must be based on this standard,” he said when officiating at the official opening of the new SK Meludam building in Betong which was streamed live via Sarawak Public Communications Unit’s (Ukas) Facebook page today.

He added that the construction of SK Meludam cost about RM34 million and the school is equipped with the necessary facilities for the benefit of students and teachers.

On the same note, Abang Johari said that he has also requested to Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim to grant Sarawak education autonomy.

He also said that it will enable Sarawak to plan for its education infrastructure involving standardizing the design for school building and teachers’s quarters.

“We know what to do with our education, unlike the federal government which keep on changing its policies with every change of education minister.

“We want a consistent policy and good school infrastructure,” he said. — DayakDaily
