KUCHING, Sept 2: The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) will carry out cloud seeding operations in Sarawak, Kedah and Perlis from Sept 3 to 5 to address worsening haze conditions and help increase water levels at dams.
In a post shared on its social media today, Nadma said the cloud seeding operations are aimed at increasing water levels in key dams while mitigating the impact of the haze.
According to a New Straits Times report on Tuesday (Sept 1), Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the operations would be conducted in collaboration with the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF).
In Sarawak, cloud seeding will be carried out at eight locations involving the Batang Ai, Bakun, Murum, Bengoh, Gerugu, Assyakirin, Sika and Matang dams.
In Kedah, the operation will target the Pedu, Muda, Ahning and Beris dams, while the Timah Tasoh Dam has been identified as the target location in Perlis.
“In Sarawak, the haze in certain areas has reached hazardous levels, with some Air Pollutant Index (API) readings almost reaching 500.
“We will carry out immediate cloud seeding. We will ask MetMalaysia to advise on the targeted areas, particularly those experiencing hazardous levels, so that cloud formations can be aligned with wind directions over critical zones,” he said after officiating the Rural Youth Convention 2026 in Shah Alam on Tuesday (Sept 1).
Ahmad Zahid said the operation would be coordinated immediately as Sarawak urgently requires assistance, with fires in Kalimantan having spread extensively and affecting nearly three-quarters of the State. — DayakDaily
