KUCHING, Sept 2: The planned cloud-seeding operation in Sarawak cannot proceed for now as the cloud formations detected in the State are unsuitable, Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said.
He said Cabinet was informed by the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry that prevailing wind movements could also carry the clouds towards the South China Sea, rendering the operation ineffective.
“So, if cloud seeding were carried out, the rain would not fall in the areas where it is needed,” he told a post-Cabinet meeting press conference in Putrajaya today as reported by Bernama.
The development comes as haze conditions in Sarawak worsen, with two areas recording hazardous Air Pollutant Index (API) readings as of 4pm today.
Serian recorded the highest API reading at 325, followed by Kuching at 309.
In a social media post today, the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) said it was planning cloud-seeding operations in Sarawak from Sept 3 to 5 to address the worsening haze and help increase water levels at key dams.
The planned cloud-seeding operations were to cover eight locations involving the Batang Ai, Bakun, Murum, Bengoh, Gerugu, Assyakirin, Sika and Matang dams. — DayakDaily
