KUCHING, May 3: The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government will continue to ensure that the rights, religious freedom and interests of all races in Sarawak are preserved in line with the policy of inclusion under the Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

Highlighting this in his Wesak Day message, Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg emphasised that the establishment of Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) was part of the efforts to strengthen the policy of inclusion which not only aims to provide financial assistance but also to unite communities of various religions and races in Sarawak.

“In conjunction with Wesak Day this year, I sincerely hope that all Buddhists in Sarawak in particular and Malaysia in general will continue to strive to strengthen the relationship between races and religions in Sarawak.

“Wesak Day is the most important festival for Buddhists and I would like to take this opportunity to wish a happy Wesak Day to all Buddhists throughout Sarawak.

“May this festival bring peace, happiness and prosperity to all,” he said in a statement today.

Abang Johari also hopes the Wesak Day celebration this year will continue to bring happiness and harmony to Sarawak and all Sarawakians, especially the Buddhists.

Wesak Day, a celebration to commemorate the birth, enlightenment and passing away of the Buddha, falls on May 4 (tomorrow) in Malaysia.

During the festival, devotees would gather in temples and shrines to perform religious rites, recite prayers and offer flowers and candles to Buddha as a symbol of gratitude and respect. — DayakDaily
