KUCHING, May 23: Sarawak Energy, through its operations and retail arm, Syarikat SESCO Berhad (SESCO), together with the police, recently uncovered a power theft case linked to cryptocurrency mining at a two-storey shophouse along Jalan Rantau Panjang Jaya, Sibu.
According to a media release, the illegal connection involved direct tapping from the incoming mains installed along the five-foot way.
“A total of 22 cryptocurrency mining servers and cables were confiscated at the premises, where further inspection revealed severe safety risks, including the potential for electrical fires, electrocution, and damage to surrounding infrastructure.
“The power theft has resulted in an estimated monthly loss of RM15,000,” said the media release.
It added that a police report has been lodged, and investigations are ongoing under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance, whereby individuals found guilty of electricity theft could face fines of up to RM200,000 and/or imprisonment of up to five years.

“Cryptocurrency mining operations require high amounts of electricity as the servers run nonstop and require cooling systems to prevent overheating.
“Illegal connections often bypass critical safety mechanisms and increase the risk of voltage instability and supply disruptions in the area, endangering both occupants and neighbouring properties.”
Sarawak Energy advises the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to electricity theft.
Landlords and property owners are advised to thoroughly check electrical installations before renting out their premises, as they could be held liable for illegal connections.
Warning signs of power theft include unusually low electricity bills despite high consumption or exposed or concealed wiring from the incoming mains.
The public is urged to report any suspicious activities related to electricity theft. Reports can be made anonymously by contacting Sarawak Energy’s Customer Care Centre at 1300-883111 or emailing customercare@sarawakenergy.com.
All reports will be kept strictly confidential. — DayakDaily
