KUCHING, Feb 8: A scheduled power supply disruption is set to affect Padungan tomorrow (Feb 9) from 3pm to 6pm to facilitate mains wiring maintenance.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has urged building and business owners to prepare for the temporary shutdown by unplugging electrical appliances, ensuring frozen food is properly stored, and maintaining adequate conditions for fish tanks during the outage.
He explained that the maintenance work follows an inspection by Sarawak Energy’s Sesco along Padungan, which identified three electrical hotspots in the area, home to over 100 century-old shophouses.
“Initially, the plan was to carry out the shutdown before Chinese New Year, but it was postponed to avoid disrupting businesses that needed to remain open for customers.
“However, we cannot delay the work any longer. The council has a responsibility to prevent potential fire hazards and safeguard the area’s heritage buildings,” he said during his ShallWeeTalk live session today.
Wee appealed for public understanding regarding the inconvenience and emphasised the importance of regular electrical maintenance.
Since he assumed office, two fire incidents have occurred in the area.
He also advised property owners to engage certified electricians for inspections and necessary wiring work to prevent fires and costly losses.
“Regular maintenance is crucial to protect both lives and property. Prevention is always better than dealing with the aftermath of a fire,” he stressed. — DayakDaily
