KUCHING, June 21: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed optimism that a final agreement between Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) can be concluded in the near future following what he described as “very positive progress” in ongoing discussions between the two entities.
Anwar said both the federal and Sarawak governments remain committed to the understanding reached between him and Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg regarding the matter.
“We discussed the issue of PETRONAS and PETROS, and we remain firm on the understanding sealed between the Premier and myself. We respect each other’s rights, regulations and laws.
“Secondly, we insist that PETRONAS and PETROS work together to elevate the dignity and economic standing of Sarawak and Malaysia as a whole. It has to be done through this common resolve,” he said when speaking during the Sarawak-level Gawai Dayak 2026 Gala Dinner at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) tonight.
Anwar stressed that cooperation between the two oil and gas entities was essential to unlock the vast opportunities available in the sector and strengthen Malaysia’s economic position.
He noted that Malaysia continues to be recognised as a peaceful country with clear economic policies, making collaboration between PETRONAS and PETROS even more important in ensuring long-term success.
Providing an update on recent developments, Anwar revealed that both he and Abang Johari had urged PETRONAS and PETROS to focus on common interests and foster closer cooperation to achieve a win-win outcome.
“We want this to be resolved fairly, squarely and justly between the two partners as a team.
“I am pleased to inform you that there has been very positive progress. I received the latest report, and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has also been assisting through the technical committee.
“I hope that in the near future, we can finalise an agreement between PETRONAS and PETROS to uplift our economy in Sarawak and throughout Malaysia,” he emphasised. — DayakDaily
