Physical road tax, driving licence still required for S’wak vehicles entering Brunei, Indonesia

Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin

KUCHING, Feb 20: Sarawak vehicles entering Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia are still required to display their physical road tax, with drivers carrying their driving licences.

Minister of Transport Sarawak, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, noted that the Malaysian Ministry of Transport (MOT) has recently announced that private vehicle owners are no longer required to display their road tax and carry a physical copy of their driving licence effective Feb 10 as part of its efforts to digitise services offered by the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

He also said the public should not panic because all private vehicle owners are given time to adapt to the digital system as they can still obtain a physical copy of their road tax from JPJ offices or the post office and stick it onto their windscreens as well as carry around the physical driving licence.

“As for Sarawak’s vehicles crossing the border to Brunei Darussalam or Kalimantan Barat, drivers must abide by the laws and regulations of the neighbouring countries.

“Both Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia are maintaining the usual procedure: physical road tax is required to be displayed on their vehicles, and vehicle drivers must carry their physical driving license when entering Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia,” he said in a statement today.

Lee further said the Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MOTS) would work closely with the Consulate General of Brunei Darussalam and the Indonesian Consul General in Kuching on the subject matter as well as bring it up in the coming Brunei Darussalam–Indonesia–Malaysia–Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP EAGA) meeting. — DayakDaily
