KUCHING, March 10: Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) will implement several activities that are geared towards waste management, recycling, and creating value from waste materials to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable practices within the community, under the Petronas Planting Tomorrow programme in Bintulu.

According to a PETRONAS press release, key components of the programme include waste collection and segregation drives to facilitate recycling and resource recovery; community clean-up campaigns to raise awareness about environmental conservation and foster a sense of ownership and responsibility for local environments; and activities with students to provide education and awareness on recycling.

“The programme was launched today with ‘gotong-royong’ activity to help create a cleaner and healthier environment at Kampung Baru, Bintulu. About 200 people including the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) committee members and PETRONAS staff participated in the event.

“The ‘gotong-royong’ activity is part of PETRONAS’ social impact pilot project in collaboration with Yayasan Hijau Malaysia (YHM), an association under Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), and Impactlution Sdn Bhd,” read the press release.

Speaking at the event, ASEAN Bintulu Fertiliser managing director and chief executive officer Lawai Jok urged all parties to contribute their recyclable items as this will help the community involved to have continuous supply of recyclable items, and allow them to generate income from the upcycling.

The launching ceremony was attended by Jepak assemblyman Iskandar Turkee, Bintulu Development Authority representative Gan Chung Yuek, Yayasan Hijau Malaysia chief operating officer Shahrinaz Maamor, and PETRONAS Sarawak senior manager Norazibah M Rabu. — DayakDaily
