KUCHING, May 14: Residents in Bintulu are still traumatised by the major floods that struck the town early last year, with many becoming fearful whenever heavy rain clouds gather, says Tanjong Batu Johnny Pang Leong Ming.
Speaking during the Motion of Appreciation on the Sarawak Governor’s opening address at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly today, he said the floods had left a lasting emotional impact on affected families.
“The big flood in February 2025 has left a deep impact on our people. Many families still remember the fear, the damage and the uncertainty. Some lost their belongings. Some lost vehicles. Some are still worried every time heavy rain comes.
“To put it simply, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Speaker, the people are now phobia. Whenever the sky turns dark, many residents start asking: will it flood again? Will the water rise again? Will our homes be safe tonight? This is why the people of Bintulu are asking: what is the major long-term solution?” he said.
Although drainage upgrading, desilting works and localised flood mitigation projects are being carried out, Pang said the people of Bintulu are now looking for a more comprehensive and permanent solution.
“Therefore, I urge the government to present and implement a comprehensive Flood Mitigation Master Plan for Bintulu, especially for urban areas and older residential areas that are repeatedly affected.
“This master plan should look into drainage capacity, river flow, retention ponds, tidal influence, land development, climate change impact, early warning systems and inter-agency coordination,” he added.
He also said agencies including the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID), Public Works Department (JKR), local authorities, utility agencies and developers must work together under a unified and structured plan.
“The people do not expect floods to disappear overnight. But they need confidence that there is a serious, structured and long-term solution,” he emphasised. — DayakDaily
