KUCHING, March 22: Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) has called on the Sarawak government to take firm action in ensuring the safety and rights of Sarawakians working and studying in Malaya and Singapore, following an alleged harassment incident involving a Sarawakian student in Johor.
PBK president Voon Lee Shan highlighted that an estimated 400,000 Sarawakians reside outside the region, with over 100,000 believed to be in Johor alone.
“This is not about politics, but about the safety and dignity of our people.
“The Sarawak government must send a strong message that Sarawakians should not be bullied outside our homeland,” he said in a press statement today.
Voon referred to a recent case in Johor, where a Sarawakian student was slapped by an unknown man for not fasting during Ramadan despite being a non-Muslim.
The situation, Voon said, was alarming, and the student was fortunate to have escaped without serious injuries.
“The Sarawak government should provide the student with legal counsel to protect his rights and ensure that the suspect is brought to justice,” he urged.
Voon further urged the Sarawak government to engage with the Federal Attorney-General’s Chambers to press for an early trial to prevent any disruption to the student’s studies.
He also noted video of the incident reportedly showed the suspect not only harassing the student but also challenging the authorities, stating, “Saya tidak kisah panggil polis!” (I don’t care if you call the police!).
Voon insisted that Sarawak must not tolerate such acts against its people and should take firm action to prevent similar occurrences in the future. — DayakDaily
