SERIAN, March 11: Some 1,000 schoolchildren from 108 primary and secondary schools here received schoolbags from Pertubuhan Dana Kita, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in Kuala Lumpur.

The donation also include stationery for the less privileged schoolchildren in the area.

The programme, titled ‘Bag2School’ was held at Serian Administrative Centre and officiated by Deputy Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture and Regional Development II Martin Ben.

He lauded the gesture of the NGO to help the schoolchildren in need, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic and the escalating cost of goods.

“The programme that we witnessed today is a testimony that Malaysians irrespective of race and religion are a caring lot,” he pointed out.

According to him, several NGOs have also come forward to help schoolchildren in Serian.

“On my part as the elected representative from the area (Serian), I will help,” Martin, who is Kedup assemblyman assured.

He believed that other elected representatives will also contribute towards the development of education in the area.

For the record, Serian has 108 schools, 99 primary schools and nine secondary schools.

Present at the programme were Tebedu assemblyman Dr Simon Sindang Bada and Serian Resident Tuah Suni, among others. — DayakDaily
