KUCHING, March 27: A man in his early 30s, employed in the private sector and residing in Bintulu, fell victim to a scam, losing RM120,000 in the process, after being enticed by promises of additional income on an online platform called ‘Oberlo.ws’.
Sarawak Commissioner of Police Dato Mancha Ata disclosed that the incident unfolded when the victim received a message from an individual going by the name of ‘Remembey_Lee’ while browsing Instagram at his residence in Bintulu in early March.
“The unknown individual offered the victim an opportunity to earn extra income as a salesperson through the ‘Oberlo.ws’ website.
“To initiate the process of receiving payment, he was required to register through the link and purchase products offered from the website in bulk. Profits from the sales of the products would be paid to the victim,” he said in a statement today.
Following registration, the victim proceeded with bulk purchases intended for resale to potential customers.
By mid-March, the victim executed nine online transactions in phases, directing funds to six different bank accounts, amounting to approximately RM120,000.
The man only realised he had been deceived when the promised payments failed to materialise.
Subsequently, the victim was even asked to make further payments which he declined as he had already exhausted all available funds.
The police advised the public to verify telephone numbers and bank accounts using the Check Scammers CCID application or the website https://semakmule.rmp.gov.my/ before engaging in any financial transactions. — DayakDaily
