KUCHING, March 27: A joint operation was launched by Miri City Council (MCC) and Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) on Feb 7 to capture and relocate exotic iguanas at Miri’s Bulatan Park in response to public complaints.

According to Miri mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang, seven iguanas were successfully apprehended and safely transported to a secure holding area using non-lethal methods.

“The captured iguanas will be transferred to a secure holding area in Miri for the purpose of conservation education and awareness about invasive species (exotic wildlife).

“Sarawak complies with the National Action Plan on Invasive Alien Species to remove exotic wildlife from the wild as these introduced animals have the ability to out-compete indigenous native species. In the longer run, indigenous native species become further endangered,” he said during the MCC Ordinary Meeting held today at the Miri City Hall’s chamber in Miri, according to a statement.

He said that SFC will continue to conduct such operations to reduce iguana populations.

“These iguanas are part of the green iguana species and pose no threat to humans. However, they will endanger local wildlife,” Yii added. — DayakDaily
