KUCHING, March 13: As Sarawakians gear up for the annual 722 Independence Day celebration, one symbol stands out as a poignant reminder of the State’s sovereignty—the Old Crown Flag.

The Lawas district coordinator for the 2025 Celebration of 722 Pan-Sarawak Tour, Egi King, opined that the historic emblem, which was proudly flown on the day Sarawak gained its independence, should take centre stage in this year’s celebrations.

This, he said, would reinforce the message that Sarawak is not just a State but a sovereign entity and an equal partner in the Federation of Malaysia.

“The Old Crown Flag shall remain as the most notable feature that reminds us of our actual history and of what we want Malaysia to be and shall remain to be as agreed by our founding fathers.

“This is why the Old Crown Flag is and should be part of the colourful features that should proudly be flown high during the day or even the whole month if we need to celebrate it as our ‘Bulan Kemerdekaan’ (Independence Month),” he said in a statement today.

July 22, or 722, holds deep significance for Sarawakians, as it marks the day Sarawak achieved self-governance in 1963.

Egi mentioned that in past years, Sarawakians were led to believe that August 31 was their Independence Day.

However, the late Chief Minister Pehin Seri Adenan Satem played a pivotal role in setting the record straight, ensuring that Sarawakians recognise and honour their true historical milestone.

“We owe the legacy to him (Adenan) and for that we want to ensure that his effort will not be in vain,” he added.

The 722 Pan-Sarawak Tour will begin its motorcade convoy from Lawas on July 18 and conclude its journey at Telok Melano, the starting point of the Pan Borneo Highway, on July 21, in celebration of Sarawak Independence Day on July 22.

The convoy is expected to draw participants from across the country, fostering unity among Sarawakians of diverse backgrounds.

The journey will also offer participants and their families the chance to explore the beauty of Sarawak’s landscapes while celebrating the State’s sovereignty. – DayakDaily
