KUCHING, April 5: As the three-day ‘Mogok Doktor Malaysia’ movement draws to an end today, there has been no sign of a strike among doctors in Sarawak.

This is according to a reliable source within the Public Health, Housing and Local Government Ministry.

“So far (there has been) no (strike),” the source confirmed earlier today.

While things are quiet here in Sarawak, Mogok Doktor Malaysia’s Instagram account was reported to have been deactivated yesterday (April 4), on the second day of the protest.

According to a news report by The Malaysian Insight, the Instagram account, which was the only social media platform used by the movement group to disseminate information, had over 15,000 followers prior to its deactivation.

The movement was started by a group of doctors who called on all doctors and medical practitioners in Malaysia to take leave or resign en masse as a sign of protest against the Health Ministry from April 3 to 5 (today).

They also declared that an estimated 8,000 out of some 20,000 contract medical officers (MOs) would participate in the strike or mass resignation event.

In exchange, they demanded that the government absorb all contract MOs into permanent positions without condition, provide basic salary increments, higher on-call rates, and resolution to specialist shortages, and house officers, among others. — DayakDaily
