KUCHING, June 14: The Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR Sarawak) has issued a strict reminder prohibiting any form of selling and fishing activities on the Batang Lupar Bridge 1, citing safety risks and traffic disruption concerns.
In a Facebook post, the department stressed that the restriction is necessary to ensure road safety and smooth traffic flow for all users, urging the public to comply with regulations and to help safeguard public infrastructure for the benefit of everyone.
“For safety and to ensure smooth traffic flow, the public is prohibited from selling and fishing on the Batang Lupar Bridge 1,” it said.
The reminder comes after images circulated on social media page Sarawak Roads Update showing individuals allegedly setting up makeshift stalls on the bridge to sell goods.
In its caption, the page highlighted that such activities could lead to traffic congestion and pose serious dangers to road users. It also noted that while there was no intention to deprive anyone of a livelihood, improper methods do not justify unsafe practices.
“Selling on the Batang Lupar Bridge is prohibited because such actions will cause traffic congestion and pose danger to road users.
“It is not our intention to deprive anyone of their livelihood, but the end does not justify the means,” it wrote.
Authorities have repeatedly reminded the public that bridges are not designated areas for commercial activity or recreational fishing, as such actions could endanger both vendors and motorists, especially along busy stretches.
JKR Sarawak’s warning signals a firmer stance against encroachments on public infrastructure, as concerns grow over safety compliance on major road networks. — DayakDaily
