KUCHING, Jan 20: Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg reserves his comment on speculation that Tan Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar will become the next Sarawak Governor (TYT).
“(I have) no comment because this is under the power of Yang di-Pertuan Agong, so I cannot give any comment,” he told reporters after attending a function at Damai Lagoon Resort here today.
When asked to elaborate on the procedure of whether the Sarawak government would recommend Wan Junaidi’s name as the next successor, Abang Johari replied: “That’s why I said I cannot comment on this publicly because the absolute power is in the hands of Yang di-Pertuan Agong.”
Yesterday (Jan 19), Wan Junaidi who is the Dewan Negara president was reported to have submitted his resignation, amid rumours that he would assume the role of the eighth Sarawak Governor, succeeding Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
Taib has been serving as the seventh Sarawak Governor since March 2014, following his resignation as the Sarawak Chief Minister after a tenure of almost 33 years.
The term for a Sarawak Governor lasts for four years, and in 2022, Taib’s tenure was extended for an additional two years, which is set to expire at the end of February this year. — DayakDaily
