KUCHING, Jan 20: The reactivation of flights between Kuching and Pontianak will be finalised after the appointment of the new West Kalimantan Governor (KALBAR).

According to Indonesia Consul-General in Kuching Raden Sigit Witjaksono, the election for the new governor will be held between September and November this year.

He added that for now, the country is to focus on the presidential election on Feb 14, together with the legislative election for members of the House of Representatives, the Senate, and local legislative councils throughout Indonesia.

He told reporters this after officiating at the 74th Immigration Service Day at the office of the Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia here today.

Last August, during the Brunei–Indonesia–Malaysia–Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) meeting, Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin revealed that Indonesia had agreed in principle to start Kuching-Pontianak flight operations.

Commenting on AirAsia increasing flight frequency between Jakarta and Kuching from weekly to daily starting Feb 8, he said it was good news as it could increase visitors from both countries. — DayakDaily
