KUCHING, May 14: The construction of a new nine-storey hotel in Kapit is set to redefine the town’s tourism appeal and economic potential, with a design that integrates local culture, sustainability, and the natural beauty of the iconic Lily Pond area.
According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki conducted a working visit to the proposed hotel site in Kapit yesterday (May 13) to assess its implementation.
The site, located at the former GiatMARA Kapit premises near Lily Pond, is being developed by Borneo Development Corporation (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd in collaboration with consulting firm Jurubina Unireka.
Also present during the visit were Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Native Laws and Customs) Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat, Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang, Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan, Baleh assemblyman Nicholas Kudi Jantai, Kapit Division resident Elvis Didit, as well as heads of departments.
The hotel’s design draws inspiration from local cultural and heritage elements, featuring traditional motifs, patterns, and colours throughout its exterior and interior.
These include heritage textile designs such as pua kumbu and ngepan Batang Rajang, intended to make the hotel not only a modern lodging facility but also a cultural experience centre.
Positioned along the southern bank of the Rajang River, the development emphasises sustainability and tranquillity while aiming to enhance the surrounding natural landscape.
Once completed, the hotel is expected to strengthen Kapit’s profile as a unique travel destination in Sarawak and contribute significantly to the local tourism and economic sectors. — DayakDaily
