New Sibu prison cluster sees 41 men and 1 woman infected with Covid-19

KUCHING, March 7: Sarawak now has an active prison cluster in Sibu, named the Jalan Awang Cluster, with 42 positive cases to date.

The cluster so far involves detainees in the prison located at Jalan Awang Ramli Amit, Sibu, according to the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).


“This cluster was detected through active case detection (ACD) among the prisoners, that was carried out on March 4 by the Sibu Divisional Health Office.

“Results of the screening found 42 positive cases consisting of 41 male and one female prisoner,” said the committee in a statement today.

For this particular cluster, a total of 43 individuals have been swabbed, with only one case returning negative results. There are currently zero cases pending laboratory test results.

Sibu also saw a second new cluster today. The Kiba Cluster involves a longhouse at Ulu During Kiba, Sibu with the index case identified as a 53-year-old Sarawakian female.

SDMC said the first victim of this cluster surfaced when she experienced some Covid-19 symptoms and underwent symptomatic screening on Feb 27 .

“A total of 93 individuals have been screened whereby 33 cases were positive including the index case, 56 cases were negative and three more samples are still waiting results,” it noted.

Meanwhile, the Jelita Cluster in Miri and Indah Riang Cluster in Kuching were declared ended today.

With this, the number of active clusters in Sarawak remains unchanged at 26. Eight of them recorded increases in new cases today while the remaining 18 did not. — DayakDaily
