KUCHING, July 14: Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS)’s Community Pantry initiative that rallies around the #kitajagakita (taking care of each other) spirit to assist those in need as the country grapples with Covid-19 will continue until Sarawak Day (July 22).

Organising chairman Dato Sim Kiang Chiok pointed out that there are still communities and groups of people needing help and assistance despite Sarawak moving into Phase 2 of the National Recovery Plan (NRP) today for which certain restrictions have been eased.

“The #kitajagakita spirit truly shines in this programme to make Sarawak the best place to live in. So we want to announce that this programme will continue until July 22.

“We hope after July 22, Sarawak can transition into another phase of the NRP where more economic sectors can resume their operations and people will have greater freedom following our aggressive mass roll out of vaccination,” he said in a statement today.

In the first round of the initiative, Sim revealed that 14 supermarkets operating in Samarahan have contributed towards helping to alleviate the burdens of those impacted significantly by the pandemic.

“About 5,500 food packs have gone to serve an estimated 22,080 people over the past eight days (from July 4 to 12) which is about 10 per cent of Samarahan population.

“On behalf of our residents, MPKS would like to express a big thank you to all the supermarkets that have stepped in to help our people in these trying and challenging times.

“Their generous actions have saved our residents not only from hunger but also other social and family problems,” he commended.

Meanwhile, the second edition of the Community Pantry initiative will see the participation of Lepapa Market, Farley, H&L, SenSen at Samarindah and Desa Ilmu, Choice at La Promenade Mall (until July 15) and Everrise.

A minimum of 30 food packs will be given out daily at 3pm at the respective participating supermarket outlets in compliance with standard operating procedures (SOP).

Members of the public who would like to assist may do so by bringing their contribution to Farley Supermarket and dropping them off. It will then be given out together with the food packs. ā€” DayakDaily
