“The recognition reflects its commitment to embracing technology, digital systems and innovative management approaches to improve municipal administration and service delivery,” MPKS said.

The Smart City Early Adopter recognition is the entry-level category under Malaysia’s Smart City Recognition programme, acknowledging local authorities that have taken initial steps towards implementing smart city initiatives.

MPKS said the achievement also reflected the commitment of its leadership and staff to strengthening municipal governance, improving operational efficiency and leveraging technology to better serve the community.

The council’s efforts are aligned with the Sarawak government’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) and Sarawak Digital Economy Blueprint 2030, both of which emphasise digital transformation, innovation and smart infrastructure development.

The recognition is expected to spur MPKS to intensify its smart city initiatives in phases, with the long-term goal of establishing Kota Samarahan as a progressive, competitive and liveable smart municipality by 2030.
