KUCHING, Dec 28: Some 631 temporary evacuation centres (PPS) have been prepared across Sarawak to face the possibility of floods arising from the North East monsoon, which started in November and is expected to last until March 2022.
According to a news report from Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) today, State Secretary Datuk Amar Jaul Samion was on the ground to check on two PPS at Stapok community hall and Min Lit Secondary School in Batu Kawa to monitor the level of preparedness by the agencies involved to assist flood victims.
“We have prepared more than 600 PPS as well as various facilities for the people who might be affected by floods.
“The Social Welfare Department, Fire and Rescue Department, Malaysia Civil Defence Force, Resident and District Offices, as well as the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) will cooperate to ensure that everything is well-organised,” he said.
Jaul, who is also SDMC chairman, asserted that the PPS is mainly set up in areas with above-average rainfall and flood-prone areas.
At the same time, he also reminded the public to be prepared and to bring along their personal belongings and important documents should they have to evacuate.
Apart from that, State Welfare Department director Noriah Ahmad said the department is prepared and assured that the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for preventing Covid-19 are being adhered to while placing victims in PPS.
In the meantime, residents affected by floods can contact the State Social Welfare Department’s operation room at 082-311554. — DayakDaily
