KUCHING, May 27: The Ministry of Communication will cover Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) contributions for part-time journalists or stringers for a year starting July 1.

In announcing this, its minister Fahmi Fadzil said his ministry would cover the contribution through the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama).

“Based on Information Department data, 565 registered media practitioners are part-timers or stringing.

“Perkeso has confirmed that of the total, 538 of them do not currently have Perkeso contributions but are eligible to be registered,” he said during the National Journalists’ Day (Hawana) 2024 Summit held at Waterfront Hotel today.

Fahmi added that he has requested that all registered media organisations update their respective data to facilitate the ministry’s distribution of this aid.

Meanwhile, Fahmi also announced the RAHMAH Media Practitioner Rebate Incentive, which provides rebates on postpaid phone bills.

He said it would be implemented in August for the second year.

“I encourage registered media organisations that have not yet subscribed to the corporate rates offered by mobile network operators (MNOs) to contact any MNO to obtain special corporate rates for media practitioners starting July 1, 2024,” he said. — DayakDaily
