KUCHING, June 10: Guntor Longhouse in Ulu Sungai Takan, Katibas, Song has been injected with a new breath of life with its two-storey concrete structure that can accommodate 33 families, says Federal Minister of Works Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

According to Nanta’s statement on June 8, the design of the longhouse maintained the elements of a traditional longhouse in addition to giving it a modern styling.

“Although it (longhouse construction) is still not complete, the modern atmosphere in its construction can be seen in this house,” he said.

Nanta added that the construction of a new house is not complete without the ‘mangkung tiang’ (hitting the post) ceremony—an Iban tradition to ensure that the house is blessed.

“Under the Ulu Rajang Development Agency (URDA), road infrastructure facilities, clean water supply, and electricity will continue to be given attention, including this (Guntor) longhouse area,” said Nanta.

The Guntor Longhouse Women’s Bureau also received a donation of RM10,000 from Nanta and Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan. — DayakDaily
