KUCHING, Nov 7: The maintenance of water supply and telecommunication services at Federal government premises in Sarawak is under Putrajaya’s purview, says the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak.

According to a press statement, the ministry often receives complaints about water supply and telecommunication services at Federal government premises.

Among the complaints received are from SMK Agama, SMK Sedaya, SMK Kanowit, Rascom Camp Batu 10, and Wisma Federaluk in Sibu; Royal Malaysian Police Training Centre (PULAPOL), Puncak Borneo Prison, SMK Pedawan, SMK Lundu and SMK Sematan in Kuching; and ICQ Mengkalap, ICQ Merapok, SMK Trusan, and the old hospital in Lawas.

Its minister, Datuk Julaihi Narawi, explained that based on the Water Supply Regulations, 1995, water supply agencies in Sarawak are only responsible for supplying water and maintaining water supply facilities up to the premises water metres only.

“Given that the maintenance of water supply and the coverage and quality of telecommunication services at federal government premises are not under the responsibility of the Sarawak government, I call on the federal government agency as the owner of the premises to ensure that the internal reticulation system of water supply and telecommunication services at Federal government premises is maintained,” he said.

He said this while chairing a meeting to explain the roles and responsibilities of the water supply and telecommunications agencies at Imperial Hotel Kuching today.

At the same time, he explained that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Sarawak also conducts mobile and fixed network audit tests periodically at strategic locations identified throughout the year.

In addition, the Federal government also implemented a point of presence (PoP) telecommunications project involving 741 schools in Sarawak to receive high-speed broadband services for schools in rural areas and hoped that the facility would also be equipped with high-speed broadband services in related schools for education and learning in schools. — DayakDaily
