KUCHING, April 4: The authorities, particularly the police, should apprehend agitators and troublemakers fanning racial and religious tensions in the country, regardless of who they are or what political party they represent.

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah emphasised that the authorities, including the Home Ministry, must act swiftly and decisively not only to resolve the problem but more importantly, put an end to the ‘Allah’ socks row once and for all.

“Those appearing to be advocating for a boycott (on KK Mart) are creating much more stress to Malaysia. The police should just nab them no matter if they are from Umno or any parties or any individuals for that matter.

“Look at Malaysia as a whole. You can be the youth chief but you cannot be playing up or inciting issues (especially concerning religion or race) this way… boycott this, boycott that….it is not good,” he said after holding a press conference on Borneo Pickleball International Tournament at the Ministry’s office in Baitulmakmur Building here today.

Abdul Karim also expressed puzzlement over the sluggish progress of the investigation into the matters and actions taken against the troublemakers, noting that acts of vigilantism have increased as several petrol bombing incidents have occurred, including in KK Mart in Jalan Satok here recently.

“We hope the authorities can go into the root (causes) of these problems, including in Sarawak. Don’t let it escalate as it is not going to benefit anyone.

“In the past, there was the ISA (Internal Security Act) but now that it has been repealed, the authorities can use other relevant and existing laws to maintain order and stop this once and for all. Otherwise, it will lead to something bigger (worsening situation),” he said.

Abdul Karim also remarked that the recent Molotov cocktail incident at KK Mart Satok was unexpected given Sarawak’s reputation for being a peaceful State with a high level of tolerance among its people.

“Nevertheless, we cannot dismiss the possibility of such incidents occurring, as there may be crazier people who try to provoke sentiments for publicity,” he added.

Abdul Karim further advised against involvement in matters related to race and religion in this diverse country.

The controversy surrounding the ‘Allah’ socks since March 13 has been relentless, despite KK Mart Group founder Datuk Seri Chai Kee Kan issuing a public apology, being charged in court, and seeking forgiveness from Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim.

The situation was further inflamed by a nationwide boycott called by Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh.

Despite numerous calls for him to stand down on the issue, including a decree from the King urging all parties not to exploit and prolong the issue, Muhamad Akmal has yesterday insisted on continuing his call to boycott KK Mart. — DayakDaily
