KUCHING, Jan 12: Relevant authorities should ensure timely completion of Mile 6, 7 and 10 flyovers while sufficient diversion lanes are constructed to cater to heavy traffic volume in the meantime.
Michael Kong, the special assistant to Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen, raised this in pointing out that the public should not be made to suffer so much and so long from the impact of the constructions.
“Many road users have experienced terrible traffic when commuting from Kuching to Padawan.
“The government must ensure that diversion lanes are constructed and that traffic is also properly managed,” he said in a statement today.
He was responding to the calls from Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman who is also Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang and Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap urging road users to be patient until the flyover projects are completed.
Stressing that people have put up with the slow progress of the flyover constructions, Kong thus strongly urged the two assemblymen to work with the Public Works Department (JKR) to ensure that these projects are completed without any further extension of deadlines.
He said these flyovers have been under construction for many years and seen numerous postponements from October 2020 to June 2021.
“Even as recently as October 2021, it was announced by Lo that all the flyovers from 4 1/2 Mile to 10 Mile will be completed.
“But a few days ago, the completion date seems to have changed again with the 7th Mile flyover expected to be completed by April 2022.
“Conveniently, there was no mention of 10th Mile flyover and this is because it will definitely not be completed by April 2022,” he observed. — DayakDaily
